PCB - Single Sided
Description
Single-sided printed circuit boards (SPCs) are the most basic PCB type, with a copper pattern formed on only one side of the board. Components are primarily mounted on one side, and electrical connections are made via the pattern on the single copper
side. Single-sided PCBs are simple and cost-effective, making them the basic type of PCB optimized for low-density, simple circuits.
Specifications
Base Material
Key factors determining the mechanical strength, electrical properties, and price of single-sided PCBs.
FR-4
• Glass fiber-based epoxy resin
• Excellent strength, heat resistance, and moisture resistance
• Suitable for industrial and high-reliability products
CEM-1 / CEM-3(FR-1 / XPC)
• Paper or composite-based
• Effective for cost savings
• Primarily used in consumer goods and simple circuits
Primarily used in consumer goods and simple circuites
Selection criteria : Prioritizing durability and reliability → FR-4 Prioritizing cost savings → CEM series
Board Thickness
• Typical range: 0.4 mm to 3.2 mm
• Affects mechanical rigidity, vibration resistance, and mounting method
Typical application examples • Small, lightweight products: 0.8 to 1.2 mm
• Products requiring mechanical rigidity: 1.6 mm or more
Copper Weight
• 1 oz ~ 2 oz/ft² (minimum standard)
• Directly related to current capacity and heat dissipation characteristics
Selection criteria
• Low-current circuits → 1 oz
• Power/high-current circuits → 2 oz or more
Lines & Spaces
Determines circuit density and manufacturing difficulty
• Standard low-cost specification: 200μm
• Minimum possible specification: 100μm
Single-sided PCBs have a single wiring layer, so smaller lines/spacing increases design freedom, but also increases cost.
Layer Count
• 1 Layer
Since wiring is only possible on one side, it is not suitable for complex circuits, but is suitable for simple control and power circuits.
Surface Finish
This process affects solderability, storability, and cost.
LF HASL(Lead-Free HASL)
• Excellent solderability for the price
• Most widely used
OSP
• Low cost and environmental friendliness
• Suitable for short-term use
Im Tin / Im Silver
• Excellent flatness
• Mid-end specifications
ENIG
• Excellent reliability and flatness
• Relatively high cost
Recommendation
LF HASL or OSP are economical for single-sided PCBs.
Solder Mask
Responsible for circuit protection and appearance quality.
Colors
• Green, White, Black, Blue, Red, Yellow
Green is the most stable and cost-effective, while White and Black are used for products that prioritize appearance.
